Southern Fried Steak With Gravy

* 1-1/2 pounds round steak cut into square servings
* 2 medium white onions sliced
* 1 tablespoon shortening
* 2 tablespoons flour
* 2 cups hot water
* 1/2 teaspoon Kitchen Bouquet
* 1 teaspoon ketchup
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
* 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Directions
1. Beat steaks with meat mallet or the edge of a plate to break down tissues.
2. Sprinkle with salt and pepper then brown the steaks in hot shortening and set aside.
3. In the same hot fat brown the onions adding more shortening if necessary.
4. Blend in the flour and add 2 cups hot water and season with salt, pepper and cayenne.
5. Add steaks to the gravy then add the Kitchen Bouquet and ketchup.
6. Cover pan and let simmer until tender.
